26.02.2021 / Conferences, assemblies A commemorative event dedicated to the 29th anniversary of the Khojaly genocide was held at the Institute of Control Systems (ICS) of ANAS online. The event was attended by the administration of the Institute, members of CYSS, representatives of the Departments of Education and Public Relations and others. First, the memory of the victims of the tragedy was commemorated with a minute of silence.
Opening the event, Academician Ali Abbasov, General Director of the Institute, noted that the Khojaly genocide is one of the most tragic events in human history. Azerbaijanis all over the world commemorate this dreadful day with deep sorrow. Speaking about the historical processes before the occupation of Azerbaijani lands, he said that the Khojaly genocide was the peak of the enemy's insidious policy.
Speaking about the crimes committed against the Azerbaijani people in Khojaly, A. Abbasov noted with regret that the fate of 150 captives is still unknown. Armenia's failure to report on this is an indication of their criminal policy.
Emphasizing that practical measures had been taken for many years to inform the world community about the Khojaly genocide and expose the perpetrators, the academician noted that on the initiative of National Leader Heydar Aliyev the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan issued the decree "On the Khojaly Genocide Day" in February 1994 and 26 February was declared the "Khojaly Genocide Day".
A. Abbasov stressed the importance of the cultural heritage destroyed as a result of the tragedy. He reminded that during the Second Karabakh War, under the leadership of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, the brave Azerbaijani Army had liberated our historical lands from enemy occupation. He noted that restoration and reconstruction work was being carried out in these areas on the instructions of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ilham Aliyev. Expressing confidence that Khojaly would be revived, the scientist asked God to rest the souls of all our martyrs.
Corresponding Member of ANAS Aminaga Sadigov, Executive Director of ICS, drew attention to the nuances related to the causes and essence of the Khojaly genocide. He noted that events of various formats dedicated to the memory of the victims of the tragedy are held every year, and marches are organized.
A. Sadigov stressed the importance of the information age we live in in terms of coverage of historical truths, youth development, achievements in science and stressed the role of ANAS in this area. He said that numerous events had been held at the Academy during the Second Karabakh War, and information about the Armenian terror had been delivered to the public.
Recalling the achievements of Azerbaijan in the 44-day war, the scientist said that despite the crushing defeat, the enemy still wouldn't give up on their policy of hate.
Aygun Aliyeva, PhD in Economiccs, Head of the Public Relations Department of ICS, said that the most terrible event in modern history took place on the night of 25-26 February 1992. She noted that the main purpose of this tragedy committed by the Armenian aggressors was to intimidate the Azerbaijani people, to break their will to fight, to force them to reconcile with the loss of some historical lands.
A. Aliyeva said that various organizations and campaigns to raise awareness of the tragedy hold events in Azerbaijan and abroad every year. One of them is the international campaign "Justice for Khojaly" launched on 8 May 2008 on the initiative of Leyla Aliyeva Leyla Aliyeva, Vice President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation.
Professor Naila Musaeva, DSc(Eng), pointed out the practical measures and projects taken to promote the Khojaly tragedy. Emphasizing the role of AzIz - Azerbaijan-Israel International Association in this process, N. Musaeva noted that every year on 26 February, AzIz organizes events under the "Justice for Khojaly" slogan.
Professor Knyaz Mammadov, DSc(Math), shared the memories of the witnesses of the Khojaly genocide. He recalled the actions of criminals such as Zori Balayan, former Armenian political leader Serzh Sargsyan, who committed atrocities against the Azerbaijani people and proudly referred to them in their works as to the service to the Armenian people.
K. Mammadov spoke about the determination, unity and humanism of the Azerbaijani people. He said that the Azerbaijani army, fighting heroically in the Second Karabakh War, did not leave unavenged the blood of the martyrs who died for the territorial integrity of the country.

He spoke about the difficulties and austere living conditions of those who suffered in the tragedy, lost loved ones and were driven away from their home lands, and asked God to rest the souls of all martyrs.
