Outstanding Azerbaijani mathematician Jalal Allakhverdiyev passed away
19.01.2017 / Conferences, assembliesThe renown Azerbaijani mathematician, Honored Science Worker, Laureate of the State Prize of the Azerbaijan SSR, Full Member of ANAS, head of "Mathematical control problems” laboratory of the Institute of Control Systems of ANAS, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Professor Jalal Allakhverdiyev passed away on 19 January 2017 at the age of 87.
Jalal Allakhverdiyev was born in Shusha on 17 September 1929. He graduated secondary school with a silver medal in Shusha in 1946.
In 1951, he graduated from the Azerbaijan State University and entered the postgraduate program of the Moscow State University, defending his Candidate of Science thesis under the supervision of Mstislav Keldysh. In 1968, he defended his Doctor of Science thesis at the Institute of Applied Mathematics of the USSR Academy of Sciences. The Higher Attestation Commission of the USSR granted him the academic title of professor in 1969. In 1972, Prof. Allakhverdiyev was elected Corresponding Member of ANAS in 1972 and Full Member of ANAS in 2001.
In 1957-1960, Jalal Allakhverdiyev worked as a senior teacher at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of the Azerbaijan State University. In 1960, he worked as head of department at the newly established Computing Center of the Azerbaijan SSR, then as deputy director for science. He headed the "Mathematical control problems” laboratory of the Institute of Cybernetics of ANAS (now the Institute of Control Systems) since 1960.
In 1969-1970, he worked at the Institute of Cybernetics of AS of the Azerbaijan SSR as deputy director for science, in 1970-1987 as director. In 1988-1994, Prof. Allakhverdiyev worked as prorector for science at the Baku State University, heading the "Mathematical modeling and operation study” department of the faculty of Applied Mathematics and Cybernetics of BSU since 1994. In 1975, he gave lectures in the USA, in 1976 in a number of universities in Great Britain. He supervised the team of Azerbaijani schoolchildren at the International Mathematical Olympiads in India in 1996 and in Argentina in 1997. In 1998-2000, he taught at the Istanbul University.
Jalal Allakhverdiyev was a member of the editorial board of the Azerbaijan Soviet Encyclopedia.
The memory of Jalal Allakhverdiyev, whose contribution to the Azerbaijani science was invaluable, will always live in the hearts of the people who knew him.
